In the North of Italy stretching between the borders with Switzerland down to Veneto there is an area of such haunting beauty that people flock there in order to experience the magical atmosphere surrounding it. This area is the Italian Lake District, including Como, Maggiore, Garda, Orta, Iseo and Lugano, full of silvery lakes, lush countryside, breathtaking ruggedness and beautiful old fashioned towns, complete with isolated noble villas.
Classically Italian, with gardens filled to the brim with fragrant flowers in front of private villas, sleepy little villages with narrow, winding cobbled roads snaking from the shores of the lake between the houses where locals sit outside to play cards and watch the world go by, balconies from which you can enjoy incredible views of the waters and the mountainous Northern landscape... no wonder this is one of the most popular areas in Italy for wedding celebrations!
There is plenty to see and do on the lakes. You can visit the pretty town of Bellagio on Lake Como, which featured in films such as Ocean’s Twelve, Star Wars and Casino Royale and enjoy walking through the beautiful gardens. You can take a boat trip on Lake Maggiore and visit the ornate Italian Palazzos and wonderful exotic gardens on the islands as well as stopping off at the pretty lakeside towns on the edges of the lake.
If you are feeling sporty, then you can scout out the climbing areas created in the natural rock face along the edges of Lake Garda, complete with readymade chocks imbedded in the rocks. Alternatively visit any of the lakes for swimming, scuba diving, kayaking, sailing and water skiing.
For a truly international experience, you could also cross the Swiss border at Lake Orta or Lake Lugano, and enjoy the sights of Italy’s neighbouring country before heading back over to the beautiful country for a taste of the Northern Italian specialities such as Casoncelli, a kind of meat ravioli served with butter, sage and parmesan cheese, pasta and meat dishes garnished with famous Piedmont truffles, polenta with wild mushrooms, various stews, risotto with saffron and a selection of delicious savoury cheeses and cured meats, all to be served with sweet mostarda, a relish made from fruit, mustard seeds and spices.
The lakes cover a huge area, and for this reason you can experience a diverse range of things when visiting their shores, so why not have you dream wedding in one of the stunning historic villas, palazzos or hotels that grace the area before exploring this stunning area on a honeymoon to remember.
