With a lower profile than the Amalfi Coast, Cilento attracts mainly Italian tourists and has stayed faithful to its Southern roots. Occupied mostly by the Cilento national park, protected as a UNESCO world heritage site, this area’s unspoilt beauty and authentic culture makes it the perfect setting for a wedding in Italy.
The waters of the Cilento Coast are amongst the cleanest in Italy, and it boasts long sandy beaches perfect for sunbathing and for long romantic walks, dotted with gorgeous little hamlets and breathtaking natural constructions such as the Grotta Azzurra in Palinuro, a cave where the water seems to glow a brilliant blue and is said to have special properties.
The towns and villages of the Cilento coast are among the most culturally intact and historically unchanged in the whole of the Campania region: Acciaroli with its quaint sand coloured houses and sleepy fishing port, Castellabate the medieval fortress town and Palinuro, a charming seaside town immersed in lush natrual landscapes. In some parts of Cilento you may find very few other English speaking tourists, even in the height of summer so it is perfect for the authentic Italian experience.
Cilento is also home to three major historical sites, including the best preserved Greek temples in the entire world at Paestum, the Carthusian Monastery of Padula, one of the largest examples of its kind, and the archaeological park of Velia, where the wonders of the ancient Greek city of Velia (Elea) are still being discovered.
Of course, Italy would not be Italy without gastronomical specialities and the Sele plains of Cilento and the perfect environment they provide for the farming of buffalo have led to the forming of the “Mozzarella Road” which runs from Salerno all the way to the Southern reaches of Cilento and lined with a plethora of fattorie producing the famous mozzarella di buffala Campana DOP, ice cream and other dairy products with buffalo milk . Other cornerstones of Cilento cuisine include tangy goat’s ricotta, small red Paestum artichokes, sweet, juicy white figs and an incredible variety of fresh seafood.
For a taste of authentic Southern Italian paradise, in a land of unspoilt natural beauty Cilento is the perfect solution. A wedding or honeymoon here means choosing a beautiful setting, historical and cultural heritage, and delicious fresh produce as well as real Italian hospitality in the beautiful hotels, villas and other establishments in the area.
