Primitivo di Manduria is a high quality, full bodied red wine coming from Apulia. It is one of Italy’s best reds, and is a real symbol of this part of Southern Italy.
Primitivo di Manduria is a DOC, meaning that it has to be produced in a certain area and in a certain way. The wine is made purely of the primitivo grape and the resulting wine is a dark violet colour and generally highly alcoholic, ranging from 14% for the dry reds to 18% for the desert wine.
It is thought that the grape originated in the Apulian hills, although some believe the vines to have been of Croatian descent seem to have been exported from there to the U.S. where a similar variety, said by some to be the same grape is used to make Zinfandel - a claim hotly disputed by others.
Whatever the case, Primitivo is an earthy, full flavoured wine with a rich, concentrated taste full of the warmth of the Italian sun and the Mediterranean soil. It is best drunk with stronger flavours including richer pasta dishes, meats, cheeses and cold cuts. The desert wine is also best drunk with strong flavours, for example dark chocolate or coffee flavoured deserts like tiramisu.
If you are a wine fan, then Apulia will be a haven for you. The area has a long history of wine making and Italian wine producers from other areas tour the vineyards for inspiration and to learn about the techniques in order to improve their own wines. This is a wonderful place to get married in a vineyard or learn about winemaking and tasting on your honeymoon. If this sounds like your think then why not consider a location in Apulia?
