“Hats are cheaper form of cosmetic surgery” said Treacy, the official Royal Wedding
milliner about his creations. But sometimes it happens that the cosmetic surgery goes wrong…
The famous Royal Wedding of Kate and William was of course one of the most important high society events of this year. It probably set wedding trends not only for the next wedding season. Kate in her simple and modest “Grace Kelly” dress looked just wonderful, and so did her sister Pippa. Both of them showed class and elegance with such a grace that no one would mind to follow their example.
But as it happened not all of guest shared the good taste of the bride, for the Wedding turned out to be an exhibition of crazy hatter Philip Treacy’s creations. It is known that 36 person bravely decided to adorn their respective heads with notorious milliner handiworks.
The best example are royal sisters of York, the princesses Beatrice and Eugenie
(in the photo above). No one knows who was their adviser, but their hats has been criticized long after the wedding. Just to remember: Beatrice kind of disfigured her lovely outfit by strange, pretzel like shaped hat, whereas Eugenie infamous hat to many person resembled a hostess headdress adorned with oversized, blood colored rose and ostrich feathers. Let us hope those two examples won’t be followed by anyone!
Another illustration of Treacy’s creativity was Victoria Beckham
. The far gone wife of David Beckham wore a pillbox hat pierced by something what looked like pieces of a shrub. More still, the former wife of late president Kennedy, Jackie used to wear this kind of hats pinned to the back of her head, which was a truly successful move, while Victoria for no reason at all pinned hers, with dubious effect just on the forehead.
Bust no bust the true is that Philip Treacy for many years now is one of favourite hat designers for royals and some other prominent women. This Irish born designer’s creations are often seen on red carpets all over the world. Seeing that in British tradition it is a thing of good taste to wear a hat to the wedding many guest and sometimes brides decide on his models. For example, the Duchess of Cornwall, Camilla wore one quite cute example of milliner works, which strangely enough looked really lovely with her disarrayed hairstyle.
Speaking about red carpets we cannot miss the famous Hollywood, where for world premiers, or awards winning galas actors try to look as original as possible, often using odd clothes and accessories. In fact Sarah Jessica Parker
for the world premiere of latest “Sex and the City” in 2010 wore an acorn and butterflies headpiece which was, well… a little bit shocking.
Being called the crazy hatter, Treacy couldn’t escape the attention of some more controversial artist of the show business. Stefania Germanotta, aka Lady Gaga on more than one occasion presented her head adorned with some vile hats by Treacy’s hand. The most notorious though was the lobster shaped, glitter covered silver hat which she wore with a see trough plastic dress for a dinner in England last February.
Philip Treacy himself calls hats the cheaper solution for plastic surgery. But as some of those “make me a beauty” treatments not always go well, so do his creations.
