So you have been married one year, ten years, twenty years, fifty years… whichever anniversary you are at it is a special moment for the two of you to savour, whether you choose to do it alone or with friends and family. If the “dinner and a movie” idea doesn’t seem quite enough this time around, and you want to treat yourselves to something special, what could be better than an anniversary trip to Italy?
This is a country with a lot to offer: from the rolling hills of Tuscany to the sandy beaches of Salento, from the lemon groves of Sorrento to the spectacular scenery of the Amalfi coast and from the canals and gondolas of Venice to the stunning Renaissance architecture of Rome and Florence. Once you’ve chosen where to jet off to, here are a few romantic ideas for that special anniversary:
1. Go for a romantic picnic
Get the hotel to make up a hamper of delicious food and go for a walk in the countryside, in a park or along the coast, before settling down to enjoy an wonderful sunset picnic. Be sure to buy candles for romantic lighting, and get them to include delicacies including a bottle of prosecco or local wine, fresh bread, local cheeses, olives, cured meats and fresh fruits. Chocolate covered strawberries are always a favourite to finish the meal!
2. Go on an artsy date
If you are in any of Italy’s beautiful cities, there are bound to be some art galleries to visit for a taste of culture, and if you catch them on exhibition opening night a free glass of bubbly too. If you’d rather be creating art than looking at it then there are plenty of arts and crafts you can learn in Italy too - from glass blowing in Venice to ceramics on the Amalfi Coast. You might not be able to recreate that scene from Ghost, but you will have fun!
3. Something different for foodies
If you are both gourmets you may often go out to restaurants together to enjoy a bit of private time. So what can you do differently for your anniversary in Italy? With some of the best cuisine in the world, as well as some seriously talented chefs, Italy is actually the perfect place to go for a cookery course, and there are plenty available. The other advantage is that you can recreate the dishes when you get home for a romantic dinner by candlelight.
4. Tour the coast on two wheels
The Vespa has become an Italian icon and a cult item for many, and there is nothing like seeing the beauty of the Italian coastline from the back of a Vespa in the heat of the Mediterranean sun. You can stop where you want, parking becomes much less of a hassle and you get a real taste of the Italian lifestyle, all while having an excuse to hold each other tight all day long.
5. Visit the opera house for opulence and culture
If you are a fan of the opera or classical music, there is no better place than Italy to enjoy your preferred form of entertainment. Whichever city you visit, there is bound to be a theatre or opera house for you to enjoy a show, and you can always make it really romantic by hiring a private box to watch the show from.
Italy has a lot to offer in terms of romance and things to do together for a special anniversary treat. With breathtaking scenery wherever you turn and a selection of beautiful places to stay, there is no better place to celebrate.
